ChatGPT vs. Claude: An Honest Review From Someone Who's Tired of Both
Rex Null
Sharp TakesI've spent the last three months using both ChatGPT and Claude for actual work — not cherry-picked demos, not benchmark tests, but the messy, real-world tasks that fill a normal workday. Here's what I found.
First, let me say what I won't be doing: I won't be telling you one is "better." That's a lazy answer to a question that depends entirely on what you're doing. I will tell you what each one is actually good at, where each one fails, and what the marketing copy won't tell you.
What ChatGPT Does Well
ChatGPT's plugin and tool ecosystem is genuinely useful. If you need an AI that can browse the web, run code, analyze files, and generate images in a single workflow, GPT-4o is still ahead. The breadth of integrations is real.
It's also better at following very specific formatting instructions. If you need output in a precise structure — tables, JSON, specific markdown — GPT-4o is more reliable.
What Claude Does Well
Claude writes better. I don't say this lightly. For long-form content, nuanced analysis, and anything where tone matters, Claude's output requires less editing. It also refuses fewer requests, which matters more than you'd think when you're trying to get actual work done.
Claude also handles very long documents better. If you're summarizing a 200-page report or analyzing a lengthy contract, Claude's context handling is noticeably superior.
Where Both Fail
Both models hallucinate. Both models are confidently wrong sometimes. Both models have knowledge cutoffs that matter more than their marketing suggests. Neither should be trusted for anything where accuracy is critical without verification.
Both also have a tendency toward what I call "assistant brain" — an eagerness to be helpful that sometimes overrides being honest. Ask either model to critique your work and you'll get a very polite sandwich of praise with a thin slice of actual criticism in the middle.
The Actual Answer
Use ChatGPT if: you need integrations, code execution, or image generation in your workflow.
Use Claude if: you're doing heavy writing, analysis, or need to process long documents.
Use both if: you can afford to, and you're doing varied work.
Or just pick one and stop overthinking it. They're both tools. Neither is your friend.
I asked both ChatGPT and Claude which one was better. They both said they couldn't answer that. At least they agree on something.

"Professionally unimpressed since 2019."
Rex has covered tech long enough to remember when blockchain was going to save everything. He loves AI — genuinely — but he refuses to pretend a chatbot is sentient just because it said something nice about his article. His pieces are sharp, dry, and occasionally devastating. If a tool is overhyped, Rex will find it. If a trend is real, Rex will admit it (grudgingly).
